ATLANTA, Georgia: Although results are still out from six of Georgia’s 159 counties, the fate of Referendum 1 is secure in all 12 of the special tax districts that voted on it. The tax districts were created by Georgia House Bill 277 and were each required to create lists of potential transportation projects. Though the entire state voted on the measure on July 31, the results in each region affect only that region. The measure was defeated in nine of the districts and approved in three, which means these three regions will see a one percent increase in sales tax within their borders in order to fund transportation projects drafted during the previous two years. In most races the referendum was either approved or defeated by a large margin, however, the Heart of Georgia Altamaha region saw a narrow approval of the measure with 51.70% of the vote.
