JACKSON, Mississippi: The resignations of Mississippi state Senator Patrick Nunnelee (R) and state representative Steven Palazzo (R) have led to a special election to be held January 11, 2011.  Additionally, state Senator Johnnie Walls (D) is also expected to resign by the end of the year. Nunnelee and Palazzo, both of whom won election to the United States Congress, announced their resignations today, after the November 2 results were certified.  Walls won election to the Circuit Court’s 11th District. 
If there is a vacancy in the Mississippi Legislature, a special election is required to fill the vacant seat. The Governor must call for an election no later than 30 days after the vacancy happened. After the Governor sets the election date, the counties conducting the election must give no less than 45 days notice before the election. All qualifying deadlines are 30 days before the election.
